By The Numbers: Broadband And DSL

The never-ending battle as to which is the better option with an internet connection continues. It never seems to end. With a broadband and DSL (digital subscriber line) having safely secured their spots on the market, what is there to learn? The broadband and DSL are, for sure, here to stay. But is there anything more than what we need to know about these?  Let’s talk figures. When we say figures, let us compare their speed, their cost and their history as well. Because before making a choice, it is always better to be given a platform of choices.

Cost: Which Is Cheaper?

For a DSL modem, here are some of the prices:

You can buy these online and have it shipped at your doorstep, or you can choose to pick it up at the store, or just buy directly from the store itself. Whatever suits you the most.

Motorola 3360DSL Modem- $39.04

This model of Motorola 3360 DSL Modem offers data transfer rates of up to 24Mps. It also includes a network security suite which offers a spam guard, a firewall, a virus protection and even parental controls. To add to that, the included AT&T self-install kit makes this easier to set up than the rest. Likewise, with Ethernet connectivity, the Motorola 3360 modem is compatible with almost any PC or Mac network-ready system. It also supports multiple users and enables sharing of files, music, photos and videos.

D-Link ADSL2+ Ethernet Modem- $41.97

Though slightly pricier than the Motorola 3360, it is environmentally-friendly and has the following other key features:

  • Full rate ADSL 2/2 modem with routing capabilities
  • Supports DSL speeds up to 24 Mbps
  • Measures 10.8 x 8.0 x 4.1 inches
  • Weighs 2.1 pounds

Netgear DM111PSP Broadband ADSL2+ Modem- $49.99

This is the most expensive of the three, but it provides you with a Smart Wizard which will more than ever, help you with the installation process. No need to read! You just have to follow a series of steps. It also boasts of a stand, Ethernet cable, phone cable, ADSL2+ filter and power adaptor that go with every purchase.

A broadband service, on the other hand, can cost anywhere from $15.00 to $300.00 per month. If you’re not the type to be online 24/7, then it can cost you $15.00 – $50.00.

Since it is mostly associated with cable tv, you just have to contact your cable provider to ask if perhaps they have a bundle for this. You also have to understand that the further you are away, the more your broadband service will be. One of the  major broadband providers are AT&T High Speed Internet which can cost you only $14.00 or $12.00.

Which Is Faster?

In terms of a theoretical peak performance, cable modem generally runs faster than that of a DSL. Cable technology supports approximately 30 Mbps of bandwidth, while most forms of DSL cannot even reach 10 Mbps. However, these days, there is a type of DSL technology, called the VDSL, which can match cable’s performance, also supporting 30 Mbps. But take note, however, that most of the available Internet service providers generally do not offer VDSL, but rather the cheaper and slower ADSL or SDSL services.
