Dell has now introduced a new model in their R series, which comes in a more defined chassis and various colors to choose from. The 17-inch model starts at $849 but there are numerous upgrades you can add and the key features are good enough to handle your everyday workload.

a.       The design is so elegant and expensive looking.

The new Dell Inspiron 17R has a brushed metal look with a wrist rest which makes it expensive looking. It comes with a hinge-forward mechanism that brings the screen about half an inch closer to the user. The chassis measures 1.3-inch thick and weighs 7.1 pounds (which is not quite ideal for travelling). The 17.3 inch widescreen display has a built in resolution of 1600×900 pixels. It is LED backlit which produces bright, bold, uniform colors. It has built in speakers, found at the lower part of the chassis, which produces tiny and weak to middle bass tones.

The full-size keyboard is sleek and resists smears.

The keyboard has a metallic gray finish in its surroundings, appears sleek and resists smears. The full size keys are firm and has dedicated numeric pad. At the bottom, you can find the touchpad that has an excellent cursor control. It has two mouse buttons which is not difficult to get used to.

b. Battery life

At the back are two USB ports, VGA port, and the nine-cell battery casing.

It has a nine-cell battery that can last for as long as seven hours and 55 minutes with just ordinary browsing and encoding, which is an advantage if you want to bring this along with you during your travels. For viewing movies or gaming, the battery could only last up to 4 hours.

c. Your connectivity

The eSATA and Ethernet ports are located at the right of the chassis with a DVD multi-drive on the right side.

On the left is the HDMI port and multi-format card reader.

The Inspiron 17R has a 1.3 megapixel Webcam suitable for chatting with friends and family. It has four USB ports, VGA and HDMI ports, and Ethernet ports. One of the USB ports can also be an eSATA port. However, it does not have an ExpressCard slot, but there is the seven-format flash card reader.

d. The Storage

It has a 320GB hard drive with a 4GB of DDR3 RAM.

e. The Graphics

The standard ATI Radeon HD5470 graphics card take the Inspiron 17R laptop’s high-definition experience to a different level. With 1 GB of dedicated back up memory, you can make large video files and enjoy highly colored games. It is pre installed with Windows 7 Home premium (64-bit). Although, this unit is not ideal for intensive gaming and graphics use, the viewing angle is wide and it displays beautiful colors.

f. The Processing Feature

The Inspiron 17R is powered by Intel’s 2.4GHz Core i5-450M CPU.
