Gateway LT2120u Review

The LT2120u is a good performing netboot that will perform basic computing chores with relative easy while giving you an all day battery staying power. Its video playback ability is also worth positive reviews. The machine is also unlikely to hurt your pocket with its reasonable price of $350 -as of 23rd March, 2010-.

The machine comes with N450 Atom processor with usefull speed of 1660 MHz and a 667 MHz Bus speed. It also ships with a pre -installed 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM memory with 800 MHz speed. You have the choice of upgrading that memory to 2 GB but you will have to replace the entire 1 GB module. The LT2120u also features an integrated 3150 graphics chipset. The storage is in the form of a single hard drive disk that packs a total of 250 GB. The other storage facilities of the LT2120u are; SDHC Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, a Multimedia Card and an XD -Picture Card.

The system comes in a 10.1 inch screen with 1024 by 600 pixel maximum resolution that supports smooth video playback. It tackles 720p HD WMV, MP4 and Quick Time with commendable ease through the VLC. There were issues when it came to preforming Flash clips and online Flash games as there were noticeable stutters. The audio lacks bass -a common problem in most of the portables-. But headphones will be more than able to sooth you as they produce quality and loud sound.

LT2120u comes with a pretty large keyboard that will offer you a productive typing experience. It feels a little delicate to work on, and its design and large size means that you will have to be careful with dirt and foreign particles. You should clean the keyboard regularly to curtail the problem. The trackpad on the other hand is quite challenging to locate and pick out from the deck as its only prominent features are the raised darker dots. It is easy to feel due to its rather strange texture.

The connectivity is in the form of 10/100/1000 mbps and wireless ethernet 540 mbps IEEE 802.11N Wi -Fi, while the interface connections are provided by three USB ports, audio in/out, ethernet and VGA video interface. You will also get a Kensington lock port in the package. The unit works with Microsoft Windows 7 Starter Edition Operating System. Other software in the bundle are the Microsoft works -the real version-, Norton Online Trialware and Office Student Trial.

The battery is a real toughy that keeps the clock ticking for 9 and a half hours. That staying power is one of the machine’s biggest draws, as is its light weight of 3.1 pounds(when full with acessories ). The unit churns out a score of 33 on the WorldBench 6 test, a result that is in line with most of its peers. It measures 10.1 by 7.3 by 1.5 inches in dimensions.
