LED Technology – Then And Now

0

You’ve Come a Long Way!
LED Technology has indeed come a very long way from its humble beginnings as a tiny red beacon of light. This article attempts to take a trip down memory lane, revisiting LED’s humble beginning to its new heights of success.

Coded Red LEDs

LED Technology began life as a small red dot. The colour choice was not actually a choice. It was a prerequisite of the science behind the design. The combination of metals and chemicals used in the production process determined that the colour would be red as a result – naturally.

Nowadays, there exists a huge spectrum of LED shades of light. However for almost a decade in the life of this new innovation, the colour was red.

Get Counting – the LED Powered Pocket Calculator Has Arrived

Anyone who existed in the decade called the Eighties will remember how impossible it was to replace tiny incandescent bulbs in small electronics. LED Technology made that task a thing of the past.

The relative low price and longevity of LEDS let to their usage in newer products such as electronic calculator displays. Designers were now able to create pocket-sized models that could be priced into a consumer friendly range.

Tell the Time LED Style

LED watches are now so commonplace, one wonders how the world ever kept accurate time before they entered the market. LED technology made watch winding obsolete for make watch manufacturers and consumers.

The technology also allowed watched more affordable watches and also more easily mass-produced. It also brought us a blending of two separate items into one – the inimitable calculator watch.

Obviously the analogue watch-making industry took a hit as a result of this new technology However the two have since reconciled and there is most certainly a thriving market for both genres of watch designs.

Seeing the Light

In the early Nineties there was a breakthrough in LED technology, which was destined to turn the lighting industry on its head. The process, called “doping” allowed for LED light to come in more than the standard red by changing the colour properties.

The LED light went from a red dot on an electronic device to a viable source of light. The technology was almost ready to head to head with the incandescent and fluorescent lighting industry.

The Ordinary Everyday Light bulb

Light bulbs have been around for over a century. LED light bulbs were considered too one-dimensional for general home use and too expensive for prolific office use. However in recent years, scientists have addressed and resolved these issues.

For office use, the longevity of LEDs and the lower energy consumption when compared to their direct competition, fluorescent bulbs, has made them much more attractive. They are also very flexible with dimmers timers and sensors more easily installed into the lighting set-up.

For the home, the cost of producing a LED light bulb comparable to a traditional incandescent one has reduced significantly. This drop in costs has resulted in lower retail prices. A significant energy saving can be realised through the use of efficient LED bulbs and more and more consumers are becoming aware of this fact.

What Lies Ahead

The future of the LED light bulb still looks bright. It’s continued success is still somewhat tied to how well it performs at the consumer level. There are continued advances that are being made in this market such as the softening and better ascetically designed fixtures. These efforts are already reaping an increase in consumer interest and retail sales.
