As a writer I am naturally interested in people. When you go to college or university and study writing one of the first things you are told to do is study people. It was pretty great knowing that the time I spent shopping or sitting around in cafes and pubs was time which could be used constructively. Students are told to buy a pen and notepad and take it everywhere to write their observations. When I was studying I used to do this all the time. By studying people it’s possible to pick up on the smallest habits, the similarities between people of all ages, their habits, their processes and their human responses to all sorts of everyday activities.
During my time at University I believe the act of studying people has been the most beneficial skill taught to me in my chosen career. As a copywriter it’s my responsibility to use my observational skills to create bespoke pieces of writing for clients all over the world. In any given week I must target so many different categories of people such as teenagers, parents, businesses, students. In short I have to explore the lives of people from all walks of life. I need to put myself in the position of a construction worker looking for qualifications, a boss who needs to consider health and safety legislations, a member of the public who has trouble accessing shops and buildings. I must be a fashionista, a gamer and an entrepreneur. Without spending time getting to know people like these and how they tick, my job would be impossible.
Help Your Writer
When working with writers like myself there are ways you can help to maximise the results you will get from their services. If you are considering working with copywriters for the first time I have some advice which could ensure you are left fully satisfied from the word go.
- Outline what you want to achieve from the work your will be asking the copywriter to produce.
- Provide links to your website, any blogs you may have and ensure you inform the writer of what it is you specifically want promoting through their writing.
- Ask about the various services which are available to you, and if you’re not sure which one to choose ask the copywriters for their advice.
- Let your writers know who your target audience is.
- If you have a voice for your company let the writer know. You may want the piece to be accessible to all readers in order to reach the widest audience, or perhaps you want only businesses, single mothers or fathers, engaged couples or people with specific set of problems.
- If applicable why not let the writer know who your competitors are, or who you wish to strive towards.
All of the information can be used to completely benefit your project. The more information you supply the better. Of course you may not be comfortable with handing out such data, but there are always non-disclosure agreements to protect yourself or contracts which can be signed.
If you haven’t got the time to disclose such information you can be sure that the copywriter will do everything they can to find as much information as possible to create the perfect post. Many clients only have time to forward a few keywords and links and those two small snippets of information form the start of a long research process. I make it my business to get to know each and every client and their target audience to ensure the work I produce will provide you with the maximum benefits. I get to know you, so I can write for you.
Use the observation skills of copywriters to produce the perfect guest blog for your organisation.
