Manufactured by the Canadian company, Research In Motion (RIM), BlackBerry has become one of the world’s most popular brands when it comes to smart phones. There have been numerous people all over the world that are proud to have BlackBerry smart phone devices as their primary cell phone. One of the product lineups from RIM is the BB Onyx 2. However, prior to taking part in the society of BB users, it is of utmost importance to first know for sure what the device can really offer. Likewise, it is also very important to keep in mind what the device cannot offer.
So, to get things started, let’s take a look at the physical design. To be honest, the physical build looks very similar to its predecessor, the original Onyx. This is clearly visible on the body, keypad composition and the navigation keys which include soft keys and trackpad. The only visible difference, it seems, lies on the back where RIM has planted a 5MP camera, more on that later.
Nevertheless, needless to say, there must be some differences otherwise RIM won’t have to bother launching a successor to the original BlackBerry Onyx. To start it off, the very first difference is the OS used in this newer version of the BB Onyx – or the BB Bold 9780. The new device counts on OS 6.0 from the Canadian company.
With that being said, the interface of the phone changes for sure. However, it is a good thing that RIM updates the OS to version 6.0 as this brings more advantages rather than disadvantages. With OS 6.0, the phone feels reasonably faster in most aspects compared to the previous OS version, the OS 5.0.
That is quite an amazing fact to know considering that Onyx 2 still uses the same CPU as its predecessor. Both these models use a CPU that runs at the clock speed of 624 MHz. Nonetheless, it is quite a pity that RIM does not upgrade the processor to a higher level. With the price ranges at which the device is offered, there are lots of smart phones out there that already offer CPU with a higher clock speed.
Now, as promised earlier, let’s talk about the camera. Compared to the 3.2MP camera on the previous model, this model will satisfy users more thanks to its 5MP camera. Besides the high resolution, the camera is even accompanied with a LED flash, autofocus and also geo-tagging capability. With this camera, no matter whether it is indoors or outdoors that you are taking photos, they will look equally natural as well as focused.
The next important thing about smart phones is, of course, connectivity. Fortunately, the Canadian manufacturer has equipped the phone with Wi-Fi as well as 3G or 3.6Mbps HSDPA connectivity modules. With these modules, browsing the internet on the BlackBerry smart phone will never feel the same anymore. It will be a lot more engaging. Moreover, thanks to the newest version of the WebKit browser, the layout now seems more convenient as well as smooth. Now users can even browse multiple websites at once by means of the multi-tab feature. And, thanks to the embedded Flash function, users will be able to experience rich internet contents as if they are browsing on their PC.
However, there may as well be one quite disappointing aspect about the BlackBerry Bold 9780 a.k.a. Onyx 2. The memory capacity is limited to just 512 MB when it comes to RAM. In terms of storage, all users get is a memory with a total capacity of mere 245 MB. As a result, they will have to choose carefully what they want to put onto their phone.
